Business Management is one of the IBDP subjects offered by Taoyuan Municipal Dayuan International Senior High School. As an IB World School, Dayuan International Senior High School (DYISH) gives a premium on engaging its students in authentic learning experiences.
Last September 28, 2022, and October 19, 2022, IBDP Business Management students HL and SL respectively simulated the roles of stakeholders (internal or external). Students were provided with hypothetical situations posing problems among stakeholders. Each team needs to find a solution to those stakeholder conflicts by interacting with real stakeholders. Invited stakeholders were the School Principal, Vice Principal, IBDP Coordinator, Section Chief of Academic Affairs, IBDP Business Management teachers, and other IBDP teachers.

The learning objectives of this class activity are the following:
1. Simulate hypothetical stakeholder conflicts;
2. Demonstrate concrete understanding and reaction to stakeholder conflicts; and
3. Receive feedback from stakeholders involved in the simulations.
Each team received constructive feedback and affirmations from the different guest stakeholders involved in each simulation. Below are photos that were taken for each activity with their corresponding hypothetical stakeholder conflicts.
Stakeholder Conflict 1: Unfair dismissal?
Description: The school principal publicly humiliate a teacher in the staffroom. The teacher storms out of the school in tears and wants the backing of her trade union to sue the school for constructive dismissal. The union representatives meet with the principal. How will the trade union representatives persuade the principal to reach a settlement?
Stakeholder Conflict 2: The failing employee?
Description: Lisa was one of the top salespeople at Tours Corp. However, she has recently been late for work and has not been meeting her sales targets. Ellie, the sales manager, wants Lisa sacked (fired) from her job but the marketing directors disagree. What should they do?
Stakeholder Conflict 3: Sexual harassment?
Description: Debbie has complained that Nial, her line manager, has been sexually harassing her over the past three months. Nial denies the charges and claims that Debbie is simply incompetent. What should the senior managers do?
Stakeholder Conflict 4: A case of grievance?
Description: A group of employees has been accused of stealing from their employers. Their boss claims that a witness saw the incident. The boss says that he is willing to forgive them if they accept a whole week’s wages to be deducted to pay for the stolen goods. The employees are adamant about their innocence. What should they do?
Stakeholder Conflict 5: Language barrier?
Description: Zama has been a shareholder of a company for 10 years already. She has been communicating with other shareholders about different business matters through email with the help of her secretary. This year, they have to meet face-to-face and decide about selling the company since it has not been performing well for the past two years due to the pandemic. Zama cannot speak English fluently. How do other shareholders make sure that they can be understood?
The session culminated with a photo opportunity among students, teachers, and guest stakeholders. The IBDP Teachers, Kennedy and Anita, expressed their gratitude to all attendees who made this historical event possible.
