Angela Object: Reality is Business the published book and podcast, written by Liu Zhi-Xin(劉致昕). Claim: We seek knowledge to reflect on the limitations of knowledge and fix mistakes.
Carine The object I chose is my COVID-19 Vaccination Record, which I received on the day I got vaccinated. It was issued by the Centers for Disease Control and with this yellow card I seem to be offered a new identity: a vaccinated, relatively and “safe” citizen. In the era of post COVID, nothing seems to be certain anymore. Many people live in panic since the pandemic may deprive them of everything, no matter who they are. Certainty of safety and future is therefore at stake. The object facilitates my understanding of the IA prompt in the sense that certainty can somehow be attained through authority. Vaccination as a political hygiene works well in Taiwan, partially because Taiwanese people have faith in the authority and that in face of COVID, the authority, or the current Taiwanese government, is fighting for people’s well-being. Certainty for the effectiveness and safety of the vaccines is connected to “who” initiates and promotes the vaccines. I myself might not have been vaccinated had it not been for a decision made at national level. My vaccination record embodies a promise of certainty made by the authority, and it demonstrates how people feel reassured that a better decision has been made by the authority. We trust that it is a better decision because the government (the embodiment of authority) should always operate for the benefit of people. It is a kind of belief that makes sense in the context of Taiwan, and I am aware that in some European countries such as France, the authority does not assume such a role because people tend to consider vaccination a personal choice, something that the government has no right to interfere. But in Taiwan, certainty is attainable and promised by the authority and people cling on to it in the time of COVID-19.

This is my copy of the 2015 Kindle edition of “5 Love Languages for Men” (revised) by Gary Chapman with Randy Southern. The book centers around love languages and is written to help its readers gain practical advice in building a romantic relationship and making it last. Building lasting romantic relationships is not an established subject at school, thereby making it one of the aspects people, like myself, may want to gain a deeper understanding of or learn about in life as they face adulthood.
This object shows significant personal knowledge of the author in building a good connection in a romantic relationship. In their research, Egbert & Polk (2006) found that the concept of expressing and receiving love introduced in the book has helped couples find satisfaction in their relationships. Meanwhile, results from another research (Bbunt, & Hazelwood, 2017) indicate that this theory of love works when both parties in a relationship are aware of self-regulation. This strongly shows how the author’s knowledge has been helping people make better decisions on how to create quality relationships.
This book is an interesting object to talk about in the realm of TOK as it demonstrates how having personal knowledge can be a powerful tool in influencing others. How so? This book is one of the best-sellers since 2009 worldwide. Words of mouth, recommendations, and positive feedback to this book help pull in more readers. Indirectly, those who have benefitted from the books are more likely to share their knowledge with their children and their grandchildren. A family that shows and models love and how to deal with relationships can serve as a good example for their next generations on how to handle a big chunk of their lives -- emotions. Personal knowledge becomes a shared one in the process. Thus, it conveys how being knowledgeable can provide inspiration or a practical guide to others, which is one of the implications of possessing knowledge.

Chingyu I have a skeletal crystal in my office which was also called Quartz Stone and was formed in the Brazilian Highlands about 5000 million years ago. The main component of the crystal is SiO2. The color of the crystal is transparent but it would be shown black and grey color as containing other mineral components, such as carbon and iron. This knowledge about the crystal belongs to the area of natural science and I totally accept this description of the crystal without any other opinions because it is supported by the complete observation of facts and thorough classification in geology. However, I personally can feel the energy as I touch the skeletal crystal and I indeed believe it can boost my chi field and protect me from being attacked by negative power because the crystal stone was regarded as containing mysterious and positive energy which was always called a sacred object in Brazilian indigenous society [Brazillians?]. This kind of knowledge in terms of the energy and the effects of the crystal is accumulated by personal experiences and beliefs and is passed generation by generation. It would usually be interpreted by people from different regions or cultural backgrounds. The reason why I chose the skeletal crystal to connect to the prompt is that there is less space to interpret the structure and use of the crystal from the perspective of knowers in natural science. But there is more space to interpret the use of the crystal and its effects on human beings from the religious wisdom of a group of people. Through my knowledge of the skeletal crystal, I realize that there is less open space to the interpretation of knowledge in natural science than in indigenous society. The knowledge in these two different areas both supports my understanding of the crystal in my real life. Even if the space of interpretation is different, it works smoothly for me to choose the appropriate perspectives to use the knowledge about the crystal based on my needs in my real life.
